The Dukan Diet is a low carb diet  based on proteins and vegetables, which is made up of 4 phases: Attack, Cruise, Consolidation, and Permanent Stabilization.

The 1st phase, Attack, promotes quick weight loss through a protein-only diet for up to 10 days. Expected weight loss is around 7 pounds in 5 days.

Depending on how much weight you need to lose, the 2nd phase of the Dukan Diet, the Cruise, could take months. Weight loss is achieved by alternating protein-rich foods and vegetables on several days. Expected weight loss is around 2 pounds per week.

Upon reaching your desired weight, your body, by nature, tends to regain lost pounds. In order to prevent this, the 3rd phase, which is the Consolidation Phase, is incorporated in your diet by gradually allowing foods that were previously forbidden, as well as 2 "celebration" meals per week. Every pound you lost during the 2nd Phase is equivalent to 5 days of the Consolidation Phase.

The 4th phase or Permanent Stabilization Phase is the maintenance part of the plan, wherein it is expected that you keep the weight off for good. But aside from the eating pattern you have developed during the last 3 phases, an additional set of rules must be followed, such as consuming 3 tablespoons of oat bran per day, an all-protein day per week, and exercise.

The Dukan Diet is obviously a high protein plan, which is beneficial in flushing out fluids from our bodies and eventually leads to weight loss. Although protein is an essential part of a diet, it will not be sufficient on its own. A truly healthy diet must consist of all food groups.
